WAS THE PRESIDENT OF FRANCE DRUNK ?

Three Cheers for freedom of the news on TV --- Belgium TV anyway.

At the recent G 8 conference, newly minted French President Nicolas Sarkozy met the electronic Press in a highly nervous state.  So nervous in fact that he gave the appearance of being drunk.  Monsieur le Président laughed and giggled, shook and mumbled, and played with his wire ear-piece  --- all the while, his eyes bouncing in his head.

The Belgium news anchor, Eric Boever, who has since apologized for his impromptu remark, suggested that the French President had had " more than water to drink " during a meeting with the Russians.  Nicolas Sarkozy is in apparent great shape for a man of his years ( 52 ).  So at least we can say that he is not a sloppy, embarrassing drunk like the late, lamented  Boris Yeltsin.

Is Sarko just another politician in a long line of Baby Boomer empty suits --- that started with Bill Clinton? People who are all sizzle and no substance?

Whatever you do, Sarko, don't get yourself photographed with a glass of wine in your hand and have to say later that it was grape juice.  Next time you meet with the Russians or visit Tony Blair in his retirement mansion, stick to vodka --- it is as transparent as water and smells twice as nice.

Here's hoping that the French don't start seeing through you!  Bottoms up, Monsieur le Président!

ITALO.

ADDENDUM, July 5, 2007 --- In a blow to the " reformist " image of Président Sarkozy, his wife, Cécillia Sarkozy, has been caught using a government credit card to the tune of 410 Euros. She holds no government job and hence has no right to dip into government expense accounts. The Sarkozy marriage is on shaky ground: the two are seldom seen together and appear to live apart. The weekly muckraking journal, Le Canard enchaîné ( The Duck in Chains ), has brought Madame Sarkozy's recent spending habits to light. The Office of the President in France is granted, by the Assembly, a yearly stipend of 32.5 million Euros. A spokesgarçon for the presidential palace called the Duck's exposure of Madame Sarkozy " petty. "  So far the Duck has not printed any photos of Madame Sarkozy in a drunken state.
